I Have a Thought

Sunday 18th July 2010

Why is it, after years and years of cutting off bits of string from a ball to tie up plants in the garden (Poor Little Rich Gays are often gardeners. Plants are something to look after and they don’t answer back – up to a point), I’m still making a wild stab at guessing the length required? Why not more methodical? Why no ruler?

Crap mentality – that’s why.

Very sorry about your string crisis. But for the most part, surely, PLRGs are never any good at such practical matters. Can you, for example, bang in a nail? And you will no doubt recall my own attempts at painting walls and woodwork in the Former Residence. Tying up is a boring task to be got through while thinking of other things – napery, placement, frocks and so on – so it is no wonder you don’t cut to length.
In any case, surely the true PLRG should not be too worried about wasting a length of string – unless you are using some Very Special and Expensive brand unknown to the general gardening public.

My string is Great Dixter’s own. If ever any one were penny wise pound foolish, it’s me! I fear final subsidence into lunacy over string

I am much bucked up, dear Blanche! Can’t wait to sample the Sunday roast medley near Dixter. I’m afraid mint jelly is completely impossible. Lurid green poison. And sauce so easy to make! Belvoir cordials may be divine. Val and I once went round the actual Belvoir Castle, home of Rutland’s Dukes. Or formerly. Extraorder drawing room, dead ringer for a hotel, matching sets horribly over-done, but awful dereliction, carpet rucked half way up the wall, silk uphols rotted, curtains in shreds. Then I read in the paper the other day that Rutland’s Duke is booming in some business or other. Maybe Belvoir cordials (do people know it’s pronounced ‘Beaver’? ). So perhaps drawing room now revived. And teeming with hotel-type guests.
