The Nicole Farhi Show will have to wait until tomorrow. And I\u2019ve an armful of functions to cover. The Autumn Season is getting\u00a0 underway \u2013 do you remember <em>Entertaining Mr Sloane<\/em>, when the crazy sister says to her brother who appears to be about to attend an all-male event: \u2018Will there be ladies? Ladies is nice at a function\u2019 ?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0I met Lord Arrowby at Borough Market (this is just\u00a0food stalls in an unprepossessing part of\u00a0 London, worshipped in an annoying way by some)\u00a0last Saturday morning, as I said I would. Only now can I bring myself to write about it. I was seven minutes late, for a start. \u2018You\u2019re far too interested in money,\u2019 he said, \u2018I know you\u2019re only aiming for a small readership, but all the same, you\u2019ll put most people off.\u2019\u00a0 He referred to my poor blog. Oh dear! I did most meekly suggest: hadn\u2019t I raised the spectre that money might be ruinous? Hadn\u2019t I asked the question: what\u2019s money for? Also, it\u2019s just a fact, a significant proportion of gays have turned out to be rather good at making or earning money in luxurious quantities, including, if I may say so, Lord A, your good self.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0But no, Lord Arrowby is being ruined by a dentist at Wandsworth. His tooth still isn\u2019t right. You might recall that it split on the \u00cele de R\u00e9 (look: accents!). His is a life of service, no huge earnings. I\u2019d got it all wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0It has to be faced. Some people can\u2019t bear money to be mentioned. The Gay Mother is one of them. Just can\u2019t bear it. Nor spent unless absolutely necessary. This is not from anxiety that it might run out but because it is the right thing to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Let us hope that Lord Arrowby will be the steel anchor preventing us all from hurtling off into madness.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0On parting, I showed the pink waistband of my pants \u2013 those Calvin Klein ones worn by teenagers. Only the waistband is pink. Not deliberately, you understand. Everyone\u2019s pants are showing these days, aren\u2019t they? It just happened. Anyway, Lord A most benign and amused by spectacle of 52-year-old in such garb.
